A deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclone and is moving towards the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast. This will cause heavy to very heavy rainfall in various districts of Tamil Nadu.

The IMD has issued a red alert for several districts, including Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Cyclone Fengal is likely to continue to move northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry during the afternoon hours of Nov. 30.

In light of heavy rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, IndiGo airline issued a travel advisory regarding its flights.

With Cyclonic Storm ’Fengal’ approaching the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, a senior IMD official said that there was will be fairly widespread moderate rainfall in most of the parts of the state.

Chennai and surrounding regions have been experiencing continuous rainfall since Tuesday, with authorities declaring a yellow alert as Cyclone Fengal intensifies.
