College football's regular season has concluded but plenty remains to be learned from conference championship weekend before the College Football Playoff reveals the bracket for the inagural 12-team tournament on Sunday.

The College Football Playoff field is mostly set. The bubble isn’t very big, but the central debate heading into the conference championship games seems clear: Will the committee elect to place three-loss Alabama into the field ahead of two-loss Miami — or even SMU if the Mustangs lose the ACC title game against Clemson?

The SMU Mustangs are headed to the ACC championship game in their first year in the Power Five conference. Why it matters: The Mustangs are No. 9 in the College Football Playoff rankings, the highest the school has ever been ranked. They now have a chance at vying for a shot at the national title.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips believes SMU should be in the College Football Playoff field no matter what happens in Saturday’s conference championship game against Clemson. He also said Monday that Miami (Fla.) should be in the field as an at-large team.
