US imposes new restrictions on chip exports to China
China’s ban on exporting certain minerals may hit tech manufacturing sector
This week, China announced a ban on exports of certain rare minerals to the United States – threatening to shake up tech manufacturing operations stateside. It’s the latest escalation in tensions between the superpowers, and comes after the Biden administration this week announced new export restrictions on chips to China.
China has banned certain metal exports in retaliation to the US chip restrictions
Chinese gallium, germanium and antimony are no longer being exported to the US. Germanium and gallium exports had already ceased in October, and antimony exports have dropped by 97 percent since September.
China retaliates against latest US chip restrictions
China ’s commerce ministry on Tuesday said it would not permit the export of dual-use items related to gallium, germanium, antimony and superhard materials to the US, and that it would implement stricter controls for graphite-related items.
