Roy was shot to death during an attempted prison escape along with Austin Avers who was serving time for participating in the 1934 escape of Raymond Hamilton, Joe Palmer and others. He was married to Bonnie Parker of Bonnie & Clyde fame but they later separated.

Parker's husband Roy Thornton was sentenced to five years in prison for burglary in March 1933. He was killed by guards on October 3, 1937, during an escape attempt from Eastham prison. [ 9 ]
